![]() ![]() We have a varied game industry now because we didn't have Unity. These moments of ingenuity, born from limitation and desperation, have far reaching consequences. But at the same time, we wouldn’t have WoW without Everquest, we wouldn’t have Everquest without DikuMUDs, and we wouldn’t have DikuMUDs without MUD2 - and we wouldn’t have MUD2 without Colossal Cave. I mean MMOs were extremely diverse until World of Warcraft, but then everybody just copied WoW and it basically killed the genre (though I’d argue that subscriptions didn’t more damage). The world would be a lesser place without text adventures, but nobody would think to make Colossal Cave in Unity. Do you think a text adventure - the concept of a text adventure - could be created in today’s environment? We have text adventures because we didn’t have graphics, and to this day, awesome text adventures are being created in a few months by a single programmer/designer. I mean, imagine the world had never seen a text adventure before. I think the limitations of the past bred more ingenuity. Building your own pipeline from farm to table is more troublesome, but you can make something that tastes different rather than waiting on McDonalds to support ray tracing.Ĭlick to expand.Little of column A, little of column B. We’ve basically got a hundred different flavors of Big Macs. Right now, I think the game industrial has the least amount of variety it has ever had, with the vast majority of games being reskins. Therefore, you learn to think that Big Macs are great and why would anyone ever want anything else? If you want vegan lasagna, you can’t have it and this pipeline will never provide it. But what happens is that this pipeline only produces Big Macs. It requires the output and specialization of hundreds, even thousands of people. You can buy a Big Mac because there are hundreds of people along this pipeline - farmers, ranchers, truck drivers, warehouse managers, technicians, managers, burger flippers, advertisers, graphic designers, technicians, computer programmers, pimply faced teenagers to take your order - it’s not actually easier to get a Big Mac. It’s like saying that hunting for your own food is a waste of time because you can just drive down to a McDonalds and get a Big Mac. Sometimes to the point where they quit their jobs because they were absolutely miserable working with someone elses busted tech.Ĭlick to expand.I wouldn’t call it wasting time. I will say, though, that I know a lot of programmers that really hate working with these engines. I've worked on projects using home brew engines where tons of stuff was cut because the programmers didn't have the time to implement/change stuff. Also, I can't stress enough how powerful it is to have a completed content pipeline where content creators can work without having to bother the programmers for features. Granted, there's a lot of lumps you'll have to take (and they can be big) but it's been worth it on every project I've worked on for years. Just the fact that it is multi plat is worth it alone imo. Like, unity licences are far cheaper than building even small parts of its tech yourself. Projects need to get out the door before money runs out and building stuff from scratch is just hard to justify for smaller teams today. ![]() The problem is that you're not building things in a vacuum.
